Being well is your direct access to having extra-ordinary results everywhere.
We say that a business can be a simple collection of activities, routines and practices. Naturally, the smaller the business, the fewer activities, routines and practices an entrepreneur and his team will have, and the larger the business, the amount of activities, routines and practices will increase directly and proportionately.
Before we go any deeper lets 1) define the words activities, routines, and practices and 2) the Principle of Integration, such that we can set up the foundation to to being well and having extra-ordinary results everywhere.
Activities, Routines and Practices
Activities keep people active, such that multiple actions can be taken. Where there is no activity, no actions are being taken. The type of actions you can take are routine actions and practice actions. Routines are what people do regularly to maintain something, and practices are what people do to get better at something.
For example, in life an activity can be working out. In business it can be doing five year planning.
If we take the activity of “working out,” you can have multiple routines inside of that activity, but to keep things simple, let us say that the routine is jogging every other day for 30 minutes. This allows you to maintain something – for example, your physique or your body weight. The consequence of not performing this routine is that you may start to notice some extra love handles around your waist!
Now, let’s take a look at practices. We can easily clarify it with what we are already familiar with, such as a dental, medical or legal practice. At our company, RSC Business Group, we have a coaching practice. If you hire a coach that has had his practice for 1 year versus a coach that has had his practice for 20 years there will be a definitive difference in the their range of skills and ability to produce results.
Continuing with the activity of “working out” a practice that you may have is “every week, increase the distance jogged in 30 minutes by 500 meters.” Naturally, you have set up this practice so that you can be a better performing jogger and have increased stamina. Whether, you have this practice because you want to perform in a competition, or simply for personal satisfaction, it is designed to make you better at being a jogger.
Thus, having a practice allows you to get real-life experience and continue to get better and better at something, such that you are producing extraordinary results everywhere. Life and business is really simple. Those who have ordinary results, have ordinary activities, routines and practices. Extra-ordinary result producers have extra-ordinary activities, routines and practices. Now, let’s go further and define the Principle of Integration.
Principle of Integration
Why is this principle important if you want to produce extraordinary results?
It’s important because many entrepreneurs operate their business from the “Principle of Compartmentalisation.” Yes, we know that’s a mouth full, but simply defined, it has to do with living your life from compartments, where you play a certain role at work, a different role at home, a different role with your friends, etc.
By the way, this is exhausting! You set yourself up in such a way that you have to remember how you are “supposed” to be with several groups of people, so you can never be who you truly are. You are always a persona. By the way, the word persona means “mask” in Latin. Take off your masks and show us who you really are. Easier said than done, but this is what the Principle of Integration is about. Remember, how you are in one area of life will spill over into other areas of your life and business.
So, while we live inside of the Principle of Compartmentalisation, where we compartmentalise, we are required to spend mental effort, as the word suggests. This additional mental effort impedes your ability to be well and produce extra-ordinary results by robbing you of vital energy that can be applied to building your business.
